It was once a thriving centre of commerce and culture, but during the cold war it became a virtual no-man's land, cut off from the rest of the city by the Berlin Wall.

Today, it is once again a bustling hub of activity, a symbol of Berlin's rapid progress. However, the radical shifting of the are cannot be seen on its surface.
